Autologous chondrocyte implantation: current surgery and rehabilitation.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) is a treatment option for full-thickness chondral, or osteochondral injuries that are painful, debilitating, and progressive. Goals of surgery and rehabilitation include replacement of damaged cartilage with hyaline or hyaline-like structure, maintained durability to withstand knee intraarticular forces over time with a productive level of function, and restoration of the normal surface congruity of the joint. Intermediate and long-term results are promising in terms of clinical improvement and durability using ACI. This article outlines the surgical technique, the histological and biomechanical principles on which the surgery and rehabilitation process are based, and a recommended rehabilitation protocol.

Autologous chondrocyte implantation is an advanced, cell-based orthobiological technology used for the treatment of chondral defects of the knee. It has been in clinical use since 1987 and has been performed on 12 000 patients internationally; but despite having been in clinical use for more than 15 years, the evidence base for rehabilitation after autologous chondrocyte implantation is notably...
متن کاملRehabilitation after autologous chondrocyte implantation for isolated cartilage defects of the knee.
Autologous chondrocyte implantation for treatment of isolated cartilage defects of the knee has become well established. Although various publications report technical modifications, clinical results, and cell-related issues, little is known about appropriate and optimal rehabilitation after autologous chondrocyte implantation. This article reviews the literature on rehabilitation after autolog...

Autologous chondrocyte implantation is an option in the treatment of full-thickness chondral or osteochondral injuries which are symptomatic. The goal of surgery and rehabilitation is the replacement of damaged cartilage with hyaline or hyaline-like cartilage, producing improved levels of function and preventing early osteoarthritis. The intermediate results have been promising in terms of func...
متن کاملImplementing one standardized rehabilitation protocol following autologous chondrocyte implantation or microfracture in the knee results in comparable physical therapy management.
OBJECTIVE The major aim of the study was (1) to compare the physiotherapy management in patients treated with autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) versus microfracture (MF) at the knee using a standardized rehabilitation protocol; and (2) to investigate the effect of activities in low-load conditions after surgery on the functional recovery was explored. DESIGN 95 physiotherapists receiv...
